The Beginning and Even Now

The end of slavery came with a trio of laws known as the Black Amendments. These amendments were put in place to end the government-sanctioned racism and discrimination faced by our people in America. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution served to abolish slavery, grant citizenship, and protect our right to vote. These black amendments were passed from 1865 to 1870, but somehow, in 2023, we are still fighting the racism and discrimination these laws were meant to stop. These constant attempts to undermine our constitutional rights as a people shed light on the real reason we were freed.

The Truth of Our Freedom

See, the actual circumstances behind why we were freed from bondage are not what we are taught in school. Yes, the North defeated the South, but this was more like a fight between siblings where they were supposed to kiss and make up. Don’t get it twisted; President Lincoln’s main goal was to keep the Union together, not free enslaved people. Our freedom in America was mainly due to consequence, not conscience. After the war, the Nation’s number one priority was reintegrating the South, and a distant second was reintegrating the formally enslaved. When the South’s reintegration became a concern, politicians agreed to the Compromise of 1877, which set the stage for Jim Crow. However, the South’s morally reprehensible strategy of dehumanizing a group of people for economic gain would come back to bite them.

Casualty in Effect

Now, I don’t know what was better: the surrender of these morally corrupt bigots or the cause and effect that set it in motion. See, our manual labor was the backbone of the Confederacy’s economy, wealth, and power. The Confederates even sold cotton bonds to Europe to fund their war. It’s only fitting that their dependence on our labor and skills put us in the perfect position to be used by the North to defeat the South. Our freedom set the stage for the South’s demise, but their ability to abandon ship like rats allowed them to flourish in the South post-war. As a result, these agents of discrimination can be found throughout the country, past and present, attempting to roll back our progress.

Attempts at Limiting Our Power Legally

Right now, dark forces are actively working to gut laws like these put in place to protect us and our families. On November 20th, 2023, the US Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that determined citizens and Civil Rights groups like the NAACP and ACLU cannot legally challenge discriminatory state and local election laws. Attempts like these aim to limit our power and silence our voices. Civil Rights organizations and individuals file most of these cases, so upholding this decision guts the laws meant to protect our constitutional rights. It’s like declawing a lion and taking out their teeth. Look around, and the signs are all around us.

A Pivotal Moment in Time

This matters to you because we find ourselves at a very pivotal moment in time where we can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. We have to vote like our family’s life depends on it cause it does. The people who rely on you and your future generations will bear the full effects of these attacks on our rights today. The rights our ancestors were humiliated and threatened for, beaten for, and murdered for. The rights that got Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated on a balcony in Memphis, Tennessee for, or Medgar Evers murdered where his family laid their heads for.

Who Got Us, But Us?

If we don’t accept our responsibility as parents and community members, who will? We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. We are the sentries in the night, protecting our families. We pave the road for their success and, most importantly, safety. We owe it to them, we owe it ourselves, and we owe it to our ancestors!
